At The Synergy Company, we feel a sense of profound responsibility to protect the natural world, and we’re committed to implementing environmentally sound practices in every aspect of what we do.

We were the first company in Utah to offset our electricity usage to wind and solar power. Not only that, we also helped organize a citywide initiative in Moab, Utah, to promote participation in the “Blue Sky Wind Power” program.

We succeeded beyond all expectations in helping Moab to be designated as the first Green Power Community in America by the EPA. Still committed to renewable energy, we’ve been given a Utah Green Business Legacy award for our long-term leadership and dedication.

We hope you can join us in helping all life on Earth survive and thrive by supporting clean energy and companies that use it! Here are 10 tips for energy conservation and ideas on how you might offset your carbon footprint:

1. Eat Seasonally & Locally When Possible

Less resources are used in bringing local food to your table (it doesn’t have to be flown on a plane and then driven on a truck to get there)!

2. Bike, Walk, or Take Public Transit

These options not only reduce CO2 emissions, they also lessen traffic congestion and the idling of engines that accompanies it.

3. Opt Into Sustainable Energy Sources Where Possible

Many local utilities have an option to swap your supplier to a sustainable source (sometimes for a small fee). You can also opt into community solar or wind energy through companies like Arcadia, and the resource Green-e can help you find clean energy providers.

4. Buy In Bulk

Opt for large quantities of items you use often to cut down on packaging waste. This can be for bulk food items like grains and nuts or even for personal or home products like hand soap. Search your area for zero waste or refill markets that allow you to bring reusable jars or containers to avoid single use packaging.

5. Compost Your Food Waste

Some cities have a compost service alongside their trash and recycling service. If yours doesn’t, you can get a simple backyard compost bin for your food scraps and yard waste.

6. Purchase Energy Efficient Products

Look for Energy Star products when shopping for appliances, lighting, or electronics. These have been certified to be more energy efficient. Incandescent bulbs waste 90 percent of their energy as heat, so swap them out for LED bulbs. LEDs use a quarter of the energy of incandescent and last up to 25 times longer.

7. Support & Buy From Environmentally Responsible & Sustainable Companies

Yes, like The Synergy Company! Companies that are committed to supporting the environment often dedicate a section of their website to their efforts. You can also find a directory on the B Corporation website.

8. Opt To Offset Your Own Personal Carbon Emissions

Companies like Terra Pass and Carbonfund make this possible for individuals and families.

9. Reduce The Use Of Resources In Your Home

Unplug electronics when not using them, turn off lights when you leave the room, replace your shower head with a low flow option, line dry your clothes and air dry your dishes, and turn down the temperature of your water heater.

You can also invest in smart surge protectors that prevent appliances that are perpetually plugged in from drawing power even when turned off (referred to as “vampire power”).

10. Invest In Reusable Items & Upcycle Existing Items

Things like water bottles, reusable grocery bags, reusable plastic wrap, and reusable zipper bags can cut back on the amount of waste that we all put into landfills.

If you do use disposable items, seek out compostable options like plant-based disposable plates and utensils.

And remember to upcycle items you already have - like glass food containers and our glass jars!

We at The Synergy Company are committed to protecting our environment in every aspect of what we do, and we invite you to join us. Our future generations, and our Mother Earth will be eternally grateful!
